Graphite drawings from artworks at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne

The NGV conducts monthly ‘Sketching in the Gallery’ sessions of two and a half hours at NGV-Australia and NGV-International.

An artist leads the group so you get varied suggestions to focus your sketching. It’s an opportunity to look closely at 2D and 3D works in the collections. With materials provided (pencil, A3 board and paper), it’s good for a challenge, and for the brain and the soul.

To draw on a larger format I started working on several A3 sheets. Then, using heavier A2 folded papers (supported by the A3 board) and a bulky 9B graphite stick, it prompted a broader approach. Sheets placed across the floor helped to line up the ‘jigsaw’ pieces.
